I love picturesque landscapes and photographing them. I also have a love for geology – the processes that form those landscapes and this book has both. Lots of colour pictures showing the stark landscape of the National Park and descriptive text of what happened here. A prime example of why Sir Peter Jackson chose New Zealand as the backdrop for the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit trilogy. The maps are helpful and reading this book, it’s the next best thing to being there. I know this book is going to take pride of place on my reference shelf.

As the back of the book says “Don’t visit Tongariro National Park without it” and I quite agree. It describes where all the features are and how to get there. It’s also a good reference for the fantasy gamer who wants to set an adventure in that area.   Hmm …. now where shall I put that dragon …
