Okay, I’ll begin by admitting that I wasn’t expecting much from a first cookbook from a home cook whose claim to fame is that he won New Zealand Masterchef last year. So exceeding my expectations wasn’t hard… but this is a much better, more interesting and quite different book to what I had anticipated.

It is firstly a very eclectic collection of recipes, varied in ingredients, in style and in cuisine. You don’t normally get recipes from Slovenia and Mexico within half a dozen pages in the same book! Secondly, it’s a book from a man who obviously loves food, and making his food both tasty and healthy. Thirdly, and of considerable interest to me, he provides instructions for making many items from sourdough bread, through home-made ricotta, through to filled chocolates, from scratch at home. Quite remarkable! I know I’m going to have a merry time trying those out (and finding another use for that Dr Who themed ice cube tray).

Now, this is not a beginner’s cookbook, and it’s definitely a bit eccentric… Brunet devotes four pages to peanut butter on toast, including how to make your own peanut butter! And that’s part of what makes this book so much fun… along with the lovely photos, some to show you how, some to show what the result should look like, and some just because Raglan is pretty.
